Is a ferret the right pet for you?
If you are thinking about getting a ferret please make sure that you do a lot of research on them. You could also go and meet some ferrets for yourself as reading about them on the internet / in books does not give you the full picture of ferrets.
Ferrets lifespan is about 7-10 years but they have been known to live to 14 years old.
Can you look after an animal for this length of time?
Ferrets can't just be kept in a small cage, they need a lot of space. They also need to have time out of the cage each day to interact and play with you.
If you are thinking about getting a ferret it is much better to get 2 as they thrive off company and you can't play like a ferret does! Ferrets have much tougher skin than we do so they play quite rough with each other. If taught correctly they will learn that humans don't have as tough skin so they will play a lot softer with their human friends.
Ferrets are obligate carnivores so require a diet that is high in animal protein and fat and low in fibre. They have a very quick digestive system, about 3 hours, so they will need a good quality ferret kibble available 24/7. Their diet should also be supplemented with raw meat e.g. chicken wings, fatty mince, rabbit, poultry etc.
